"Elgin had the brilliant but ultimately failed idea to produce a watch movement that could be converted easily from open face (wind at 12:00) to a hunting case (wind at 3:00) by the watchmakers/jewelers who would sell them. The idea was that they would not have to build both hunting and open-face movements. In the end, the idea proved too mechanically complicated to be profitable but it left us with some wonderful watches including this 21 jewel convertible grade which is perhaps the highest grade watches Elgin ever made. Only 450 were ever produced"
