Beautiful Antique Sterling Silver Ornate Gold Inlaid Apple Corer Shagreen Case
This exceptional sterling silver apple corer is a masterpiece of craftsmanship from the eighteenth century, possibly earlier. The detail and skill involved to create such a fine piece is clear to see. Unfortunately, the case is not stamped with a makers mark and it is possible, this was because the piece was commissioned as a one off piece by a wealthy client. The case is sterling silver and it has been expertly inlaid with both rose and yellow gold. The case is finely engraved with garlands, an eagle, a monogram for J.S.P and each end has a wonderful chased golden flower. The bottom section unscrews to reveal the apple corer section which also screws back into the case in reverse to operate the corer. Many corers were created but often in materials like bone, wood or ivory, only the very affluent could afford the luxury of sterling silver. Sterling silver is naturally antibacterial and so using it in this way would certainly have its benefits.
American apple corers are very rare and to be made entirely in silver even more so. This beautiful example of fine metalwork comes presented in the original red felt lined shagreen cylindrical case with brass closures. Definitely a fine example of precious metal functional art from a bygone era. A very collectable piece.
