A fascinating & interesting piece, that could date from anywhere in the 1800’s, definitely Australian Colonial though. The egg depicts at both ends the points of a compass. The main body of the egg features a bearded man on horseback with moutains in the distance, above which is an arch with a stylised image of the Sun. This is all inturn surrounded by leaves or fronds. On the opposite side is an image of a large Emu with the word RECUERDO encased in a scroll and again all this is surrounded by leaves or fronds. The interesting thing is that the word RECUERDO is Spanish and has several meanings, some of which are Memory Souvenir Remembrance Keepsake. Also note how the man on horseback is dressed, definitely not your typical Colonial man’s attire. No history is known about the item, so its age and origin remain a mystery. The egg has a few red ink stains, some age spotting / foxing & a very old jagged crack. The egg is still very solidly in one piece though. A great piece of collectable Australiana !!!
