Dated New York, March 1853 to My Dear Mother (Possibly Alice J Middleton, that name appears bottom left on back page). From what I can gather, the letter was written after the person returned home, as it states to the rear “I took the ship the 25th Feb for a speedy journey homeward …. determined never to go again”. He arrived at the port of Jeddo (Known as Edo) & described the inhabitants as “having yellowish complexions, small eyes, high cheek bones & very polite”. The authors' name of the letter is hard to decipher Darr??ies? Double-sided page measuring 30.5cms x 20cms. Interesting!!
