Interesting item, features 2 sets of hallmarks & some crudely engraved details to the base. The main / large hallmark on the base of the tray is London with date letter l for 1786. Makers mark I.H, John Hutson, who specialized in trays / salvers. When photographing I noticed very tiny hallmarks on the decorative rim. Its the letter u for 1795 with a Kings head next to it. On the underside is a makers mark W.C There are 2 possible reasons for this. The decorative rim & 4 feet were added in 1795 or it was repaired in 1795. In my opinion it was the 1st possibility, the rim & feet were added in 1795 by the maker W.C. Either way its in superb condition and has stood the test of time. Measures 37cms in diameter x 3cms high & weighs approx 1.2 kilos. To the centre is an engraved image of an English Oak tree. Also just noticed some very faint, crudely engraved markings to the base. Very hard to read, but one looks very much like 15 inches The diameter of the tray is approx 15 inches, this was possibly engraved to the base before the alteration in 1795. There also about another 12 letters & marks etc engraved that don’t make any sense. Fascinating item !!
