Antique 1885 Sterling Silver Ornately Decorated Basket Charles Favell 192.2g

A very fine 18th century sterling silver basket made in 1885 by Charles Favell. The basket is designed with elegant fluting to the lower section and a delightful hand pierced upper gallery decorated in a repeating floral design and stylised lion paw feet. Each side of the basket has a small circular cartouche, one blank and one hand engraved with a fist, boars head with droplets of blood. The possible meanings behind these symbols are the arm representing an industrial person, a boar for bravery, fights til death and the droplets of blood for endurance. The underside of the basket and handle are stamped with the crown for Sheffield, the makers stamp C.F for Charles Favell, lion rampant purity stamp and the date letter S for the 1885. The overall condition of the basket is excellent, there is just a small crack in the top rim of the top of the basket, (shown is second photo) which could be repaired by a silversmith.

Dimensions are as follows:

Length 16.5 cm x width 9.4 cm x thickness
Weight 192.2 grams
