Antique Thai Bia Gae Protective Cowrie Shell Amulet Circa 1900s

A rare antique Thai Bia Gae protective amulet dating from approximately early 1900s.

The amulet incorporates a natural spotted cowrie shell encased within a hand formed body of sacred cord and cloth, coated with dark lacquer and decorated with traditional incised yantra patterns. Part of the cowrie shell remains deliberately exposed.

Bia Gae amulets were traditionally blessed by Buddhist monks and carried for protection against danger, misfortune, harmful spirits and negative influences.

Condition: Age related wear, cracking, losses and exposed fibres to the lacquered covering. The cowrie shell has a small edge chip. Its untouched condition and surface patina are consistent with considerable age.

Circa 1900s, Measures 41.5mm wide, weight 34.5g.
