Description
Antique Victorian Parkins & Gotto Treen Seal Box +Engraved YA Monogram Seal
A charming antique treen seal box, retailed by Parkins & Gotto, the well-known London stationers and luxury goods retailers of the 19th century.
The box is finely turned from treen that has aged to a warm honey-colour, with a screw-threaded lid and cylindrical body. Inside is an original round steel seal or stamp, the face engraved with an ornate interlaced monogram or crest-style Y A. The seal shows attractive age-related surface patina, while the wooden case retains a lovely mellow colour from age and handling.
These small treen boxes were used to protect desk seals, stamps, or personal monogram seals, often forming part of a Victorian writing or correspondence set. Parkins & Gotto were known for high-quality stationery, writing accessories, leather goods and desk items, making this a collectable piece of Victorian deskware.
Parkins and Gotto was a successful Victorian firm founded by William Parkins and Henry Jenkin Gotto, who began trading as stationers in London around 1845.
The business grew quickly and soon expanded far beyond paper and printing, becoming known for an extensive range of practical and decorative goods. Their early presence is recorded at 2 Hanway Street and 25 Oxford Street, and by the mid nineteenth century they occupied a succession of neighbouring premises as the company flourished.
