Vintage Chinese Hu Kaiwen Nine Dragons Gilt Ink Stick in Original Brocade Case

A substantial vintage Chinese Huizhou ink stick produced by the renowned Hu Kaiwen ink factory in Anhui Province.

The rectangular black ink cake is elaborately moulded on both sides with nine sinuous dragons, finely detailed in gold, silver and red pigment. The central characters "九龍" translate as Nine Dragons, an auspicious imperial subject symbolising authority, strength and good fortune.

The original case label reads "中國徽墨", meaning Chinese Huizhou ink, together with "胡開文墨廠精製", identifying it as finely made by the Hu Kaiwen Ink Factory.

Presented in its original gold and blue brocade fitted case with silk lining and traditional fastening pins. Probably dating from the mid to late 20th century.

Weight: 107 grams

Condition: Extensive age related shrinkage and surface cracking throughout the ink stick, with several small areas of loss to the moulded decoration. The gilt and coloured details remain vibrant. The original brocade case has staining, fading, fraying and general wear consistent with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
