Antique 19th C Burmese Gilt Papier-Mâché Puppet Mask / Khon Mask

A striking 19th century Burmese ceremonial Khon puppet mask, formed from papier-mâché and richly decorated with gilt lacquer, raised relief ornament and inset coloured mirror-glass panels. The mask depicts a fierce mythological guardian or demon-like figure, with large round eyes, pronounced fangs, exposed teeth and an elaborate crown-like upper border.


The surface is decorated with scrolling foliate motifs and applied jewel-like glass elements, giving the mask a theatrical and highly reflective appearance. The fierce expression suggests a protective guardian, figures traditionally associated with Burmese Buddhist, courtly and theatrical traditions.


The mask shows age-related wear, losses to gilding and glass inlays, old repairs, surface cracking and patination, consistent with age and use., height 15cm, width 22cm at widest, please see photos for condition, needs a light clean due to being stored away for a long time.
