Antique c.1840s Troughton & Simms London Brass Surveyors Level Compass Boxed
A superb and substantial 19th century precision surveying instrument by the renowned London scientific instrument makers Troughton & Simms.
Dating to approximately c.1840, this impressive lacquered brass surveyor's or engineer's level features a large 53cm telescope with approximately 4cm objective lens, a finely divided silvered compass, long precision spirit level mounted beneath the telescope and extensive fine adjustment mechanisms.

Troughton & Simms were among the most respected British manufacturers of precision scientific, astronomical and surveying instruments during the 19th century. Their instruments were supplied to professional surveyors, observatories, engineers and major government surveying operations.
A particularly impressive feature is the large silvered compass positioned beneath the telescope, together with the long glass spirit level used to establish an accurately horizontal line of sight.
The instrument retains its handsome lacquered brass finish with wonderful age and patina. It is accompanied by its substantial fitted wooden travelling case with internal shaped supports and a number of associated components and accessories as photographed.

Condition
Very good antique condition considering its considerable age.
The brass retains an attractive aged surface with wear, marks, scratches and areas of patination consistent with genuine professional use and approximately 180 years of age.
The silvered compass dial displays expected age and surface wear but remains remarkably attractive.
The fitted case shows age related marks, wear and evidence of use, no locks.
The instrument and accessories are offered exactly as photographed. We have not attempted to polish or cosmetically restore the brass, preserving its desirable period character and originality, lenses need cleaning.
A fascinating survivor from the golden age of British precision instrument making and an excellent acquisition for a collector of antique scientific instruments, surveying equipment, engineering history or early optical instruments.
