René Lalique Lutteurs Bowl No.890 Grey Patina c1914 Signed R. Lalique Rare
René Lalique Lutteurs (Wrestlers) Bowl No. 890, designed in 1914, is one of René Lalique's earliest and most sculptural creations, produced during the transition from his Art Nouveau masterpieces into the emerging Art Deco movement. Regarded as one of his rarer and more dramatic designs, the bowl features a broad satin-frosted glass vessel raised upon a circular foot decorated with a continuous procession of nude wrestlers locked in dynamic combat.
The muscular figures are deeply moulded in relief, showcasing Lalique's exceptional ability to capture movement, anatomy, and expressive form in glass. Their intertwined poses create a striking visual rhythm around the base, while the understated satin-finished bowl above provides a beautiful contrast to the intricate sculptural decoration. The original grey patina accentuates every detail of the wrestlers, adding depth and definition to this remarkable early design.
Highly sought after by collectors, the Lutteurs bowl is admired not only for its rarity but also for its bold artistic statement. It perfectly reflects Lalique's fascination with the human figure and his innovative approach to decorative glass during the early 20th century.
This example retains its desirable original grey patina and is signed R. Lalique to the underside.
A museum-quality piece and an outstanding addition to any René Lalique, Art Deco, or French decorative arts collection.
