Description
René Lalique Silènes Vase No. 10-923 Green Patinated Opalescent c1938 Signed
An exceptional and highly sought-after original René Lalique "Silènes" vase, catalogue No. 10-923, designed by René Lalique in 1938. This striking Art Deco masterpiece represents one of the final vase designs created during René Lalique's lifetime and is regarded as one of the most impressive figurative models from his late period.
The vase is beautifully moulded in frosted opalescent glass with a rich translucent green patinated finish, giving it a luminous appearance that changes dramatically under different lighting conditions. The decoration consists of finely detailed branches and foliage encircling the body, from which expressive Silène (faun) masks emerge in high relief. Each faun displays remarkable sculptural detail, with finely modelled facial features, textured hair and characteristic pointed ears, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship for which René Lalique became world renowned.
The elegant flared form complements the relief decoration perfectly, allowing the opalescence and green patina to highlight every detail of the design. When illuminated, the glass exhibits a beautiful glow, creating depth and contrast between the frosted surfaces, polished details and the vibrant green patination.
Designed on 4 October 1938, the Silènes vase is one of René Lalique's last major artistic creations before the outbreak of the Second World War. Original lifetime examples are considerably scarcer than many earlier Lalique vase models and are highly prized by serious collectors of Art Deco glass.
This example retains its attractive original green patinated finish and presents beautifully. The frosted surfaces remain crisp, and the moulded decoration is exceptionally well defined. The vase is signed R. Lalique France to the underside, confirming production during René Lalique's lifetime.
A magnificent museum-quality example of late René Lalique glass, equally suited to an advanced Lalique collection, an important Art Deco collection, or as a centrepiece decorative object.
Condition
Presented in very good antique condition with no obvious chips or cracks observed. The original green patinated finish remains well preserved with light age-related wear consistent with careful use. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
