Among the most celebrated creations of René Lalique's Art Deco period, the Gros Scarabées vase stands as one of the defining masterpieces of twentieth century French decorative arts. Its powerful spherical form is enveloped by boldly sculpted scarab beetles, an ancient symbol of rebirth and immortality that Lalique transformed into one of his most iconic decorative motifs.


Presented here in an exceptional Jade green which changes appearance in different lighting, this is one of the most desirable colourways produced during Lalique's lifetime. The rich translucent glass, combined with the contrasting satin and polished surfaces, creates a remarkable interplay of light that changes dramatically throughout the day, showcasing the extraordinary artistry of the Wingen sur Moder workshops.


Standing an impressive 29 cm high, this museum quality example displays outstanding mould definition, crisp sculptural detail and exceptional visual presence. Equally important, it remains in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. It has been carefully examined under UV light, confirming no evidence of repairs. The original moulded "R. Lalique" signature is present to the underside which is consistent with production during the 1920s.


Few works better encapsulate René Lalique's transition from celebrated jeweller to arguably the greatest artistic glassmaker of the twentieth century. The Gros Scarabées vase has long been regarded as one of the cornerstones of serious Lalique collections, with exceptional coloured examples rarely becoming available on the international market.


This vase is not simply an outstanding example of Lalique's work.
